Steam Electrolysis vs. Co-Electrolysis: Mechanistic Studies of Long-Term Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells

چکیده
High-temperature electrolysis using solid oxide cells (SOECs) is an innovative technology to temporarily store unused electrical energy from renewable sources. However, they show continuous performance loss during long-term operation, which the main issue preventing their widespread use. In this work, we have performed stability tests up 1000 h under steam and co-electrolysis conditions commercial NiO-YSZ/YSZ/GDC/LSC single in order understand degradation process. The were carried out at different temperatures fuel gas compositions. Intermittent AC- DC- measurements characterize determine responsible electrode processes for operation. Steam Electrolysis Using a Microtubular Solid Oxide Fuel Cell
Reversible operation of a microtubular solid oxide fuel cell SOFC with high electrochemical efficiency is reported. These devices can ideally produce hydrogen from electricity and steam solid oxide electrolyser SOE and then use the stored hydrogen to generate electricity and heat SOFC , acting as a storage device for the electrical energy. A fuel-electrode-supported Ni–yttriastabilized zirconia...

Porous composite anodes consisting of a yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) backbone that was impregnated with CeO2 and various amounts of metallic components including Cu, Co and Pd were fabricated. The performance of these anodes was then tested in a solid oxide water electrolysis cell under conditions where the anode was exposed to the reducing gasses H2, CH4 and CO. The reducing gasses were us...

Through the use of ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS) and a single-sided solid oxide electrochemical cell (SOC), we have studied the mechanism of electrocatalytic splitting of water (H2O + 2e(-) → H2 + O(2-)) and electro-oxidation of hydrogen (H2 + O(2-) → H2O + 2e(-)) at ∼700 °C in 0.5 Torr of H2/H2O on ceria (CeO2-x) electrodes. The experiments reveal a transient build-...

In this paper, density functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed to analyze the electrochemical water-splitting process producing molecular oxygen (O2) and hydrogen (H2). We investigate the trends in the electro-catalytic properties of (110) surfaces of three rutile-type oxides (RuO2, IrO2, and TiO2). The two first of these oxide anodes show lower O2-evolving over-potentials than metal...
متن کاملElectrolyte Degradation in Anode Supported Microtubular YSZ-based Solid Oxide Steam Electrolysis Cells at high voltages of operation
Degradation of solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) is probably the biggest concern in the field of high temperature steam electrolysis (HTSE). Anode supported, YSZ-based microtubular solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) have been tested in fuel cell mode and also at high voltages (up to 2.8V) under electrolysis mode. At high steam conversion rates the cell voltage tends to saturate. Our hypothesis ...
